Google tests official-site links at the top of AI answers: what it means for restaurants
On October 15, 2026, Google said it will test a section at the top of some AI Mode and AI Overviews answers that highlights the official sites for a task. It is also showing inline links higher and testing clickable creator names on video results. For a restaurant, the work is plain: give every task a guest might search for, such as the menu, ordering and booking, one clear page on your own site.

What happened
Google announced five link changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15, 2026. Three of them matter to a restaurant.
- Links sit higher. Inline links, the ones set inside the words of an AI answer, will show near the top more often.
- An official-sites section. Google will test a block at the top of some answers. It highlights the official sites for a task, with a short note on why each link is useful.
- Clickable creator names. On video results in AI Mode, Google is testing creator and publisher names that open their Search profiles.
The other two bring news carousels to more countries and languages, and add image thumbnails to related-article links.
What it means for a restaurant
Think about the tasks a guest brings to Google. They want the menu, a table, a pickup order or the hours for one store. Google’s post says that for some tasks there are “only one or two official places on the web” to get it done. These are those searches. If the test sticks, the answer may point straight to a page on your own site.
That only helps if the page exists. A lot of chains send every task to the home page. Others link the menu to a delivery app or a PDF from two seasons ago. An AI answer can’t call out a clear official page you never built.
So check one store the way a guest would. Is there one page for its menu? One for ordering? One for booking, if you take bookings? Does each location have its own page with its address and hours? The website link on each store’s Business Profile should point to that store’s page, not the home page.
The creator test points the same way. A food creator’s name on a video result may soon open a profile of their wider work. That rewards real local creators with a real body of posts. It also means a guest can see who made a video about your store.
Which tools this touches
Your website is the tool here, not an ad platform. Restaurant site builders differ on how much of this they set up for you. Popmenu bundles the website, online ordering and guest marketing from one vendor. Owner.com sets up and runs the site, ordering and marketing for an independent restaurant. Toast Email Marketing does not build pages, but its emails can send guests to the right ones. Our restaurant marketing rankings compare them on published plans.
Whatever builds your site, ask one question. Can it give each store and each task its own page, with a clean address?
Our take
This is a test, and Google gave no numbers on reach. Search Engine Journal noted that the post does not say how much inline links grew. It also gives no user count behind the claim that Preferred Sources use has grown more than sevenfold this year. So don’t rebuild your site for this alone.
But the fix it rewards is cheap and was worth doing anyway. One page per task, one page per store, and a Business Profile that links to the right one. A guest who searches “order from” your brand should land on your ordering page in one tap. Whether Google, a map app or a chatbot sends them, a clear page wins.
Do the check on your busiest store first. Then copy the pattern to the rest.
